Rheumatology

The Rheumatology research group is dedicated to clinical and translational research projects in rheumatic autoimmune diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) etc.

The study group integrates physicians with clinical experience on Rheumatic disease with skilled biologists/biotechnologists with post-doc and PhD student positions.

The Rheumatology study group is currently interested in studying biomarkers of treatment response in RA including histological and molecular characterization of synovial biopsy, biomarkers of disease activity in SLE including those involved in the atherogenesis process, biomarkers of interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension in SSc. The study group is also involved in translational research of other rheumatic diseases as in biomarker discovery in fibromyalgia.

Specific targets of study are vitamin D modulation of inflammation in rheumatic diseases and the role of Gas6/TAM system in regulation of innate immunity and fibrosis.

The research group fully integrates clinical expertise with blood and tissue analysis and “in vitro” techniques.

The group has national and international established collaborations and is involved in European Union funded research projects (https://3tr-imi.eu).
