Expert
The Biosafety Research Laboratories (BRL) are a high-containment research facility dedicated to the safe handling and study of airborne and potentially lethal infectious agents.
The Laboratories are equipped with advanced containment technologies and stringent safety protocols, supporting research on high-risk pathogens, host–pathogen interactions, and the development of novel diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics.
A key innovative feature of this BSL-3 facility is its integrated layout, with physically separated cubicles that allow the simultaneous handling of different microorganisms under high-containment conditions.
The facility also offers the unique possibility to investigate metabolic processes directly in vivo in the context of high-risk pathogens, and to isolate specific cell populations of interest without prior sample inactivation.
SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISOR
Prof. Cinzia Borgogna
INSTRUMENTS
The facility is equipped with:
- Class II Biological Safety Cabinets
- Ultracentrifuge WX+
Additional instrumentation is currently being installed, including:
- Cell sorter MACSQuant Tyto Lux (Miltenyi Biotec)
- Oxygen consumption monitoring system Resipher (Lucid Scientific)
- Multimode microplate reader
- Spectrophotometer
- Sonicator
The Facility Offers
- Isolation, identification, and characterization of infectious pathogens.
- In vitro functional assays.
- Neutralization assays.
These services will be available through two access modes:
- Direct access for external users with certified BSL-3 training, to independently carry out experiments.
- Commissioned experiments performed by our qualified staff for users without BSL-3 access credentials.
